School of Social Welfare Application
As a current UAlbany student interested in the Social Welfare major, you are required to complete this application, an essay, and obtain two references. All materials required for the application are contained in this form. Upon completion, please make sure to submit the application as it will be sent to the admissions committee for review.
The supplemental application includes:
A resume
A personal statement of not more than 3 pages which can be uploaded
Two letters of recommendation; one professional and one academic, which are submitted separately by the individuals you select.
Before completing the application, please take some time to consider your current readiness to undertake education and training to become a social work professional.
The questions below are meant to help you decide about applying for the major and
are not
meant to be answered in writing in the personal statement.
The social work program is demanding and requires considerable time and attention. In addition,
functioning as a social worker requires a capacity to put one’s own issues aside in order to be
helpful to clients, so
consider these questions carefully before you complete the application.

Why are you interested in social work as a career? Please discuss information about life circumstances, work or volunteer experiences that have influenced your choice of career.
Social workers help individuals, groups and/or communities engage in activities to achieve their goals. What are some of your strengths and lessons learned from your past that have helped you to help others? How have these strengths and lessons prepared you for social work?
Social workers are passionate about fighting against racism, sexism, and other social and economic injustices. Please specify an issue or social problem (e.g. HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, mental illness, homelessness) you are passionate about, and how this relates to your career goals.
